Solar and Wind-generated Electricity in Clark County

Awesome Springfield Ohio

Topic: Is Off-Grid Electricty reliable in Springfield?

Since I generally work in the field of electronics, there's much that requires stable electricity around me.

Computers, lights, security cameras, freezer, dvr, server, modem/router, washer/spinner, speakers, and more run for free.

But even those items that are not ordinarily used every day also run perfectly, such as saws and drills, the electric weedwhackers and the compressor, soldering irons, the blender, food processor, and bread maker, also operate free exclusively off of 48v battery banks (nowadays).

Solar Panels Springfield Ohio

The good news is that Solar panels are not prone to fail, ever.

I've lost one in over a decade in 2014. A tree branch bounced off one of the solar panels mounted on the bus, destroying the solar panel (while at one of the Eric and Theresa Crow rental properties located in Springfield Ohio).

Solar Panels are Durable

However, the loss showed me just how durable the panels really are. Only ONE panel broke!

Battery Maintenance?

About the only item you'll ever need to replace in an off-grid power system on a regular basis are the batteries.

Depending on how much of a load is applied to the batteries will begin to show signs of depreciation, and become unstable over time.

This is especially true if you are caught in the capitalist web of purchasing junk batteries with a well-known name stamped on the front of them (hello Fake Duracell).

It's 2021 and I'm back to update this page and state that a total change-out from the Fake Duracell batteries to the true-and-tried well-known Trojans occurred this year. I will try to update this page as time goes by as to their reliability and longevity.

Even with the expected battery replacements, contrast the investment with the yearly amount you will have thrown away to an entity that may bribe with their "lobbyists" (that bring bagfuls of money to "our" representatives curtailing their better ethics, manipulating their decisions), and you have aided and abetted your own demise as the electric monopoly raises its rates at will, and send your children off to create their wars, sacrifice for their invested interests, and of no-good to our Nation as a whole.

Codes Departments

Nothing curtails invention like good old brute force (a.k.a "Codes" and "laws" that hinder bettering our existence).

As it turned out, the inability for me to "https://legal.y" place the panels on the roof as I was free to do down in Florida, turned into a blessing.

Not only are the solar panels able to be adjusted for the seasonal sun when placed on poles in the ground (instead of the more-common roof installations), but the panels can be easily cleaned!

By being nearer to the ground enabled easy cleaning of the solar panels.

Push-Broom works perfect for cleaning off the snow.

Common Types of Solar Panels

There are three main types of solar panels presently:

Monocrystalline (costs more, usually yields more)

Polycrystalline (costs just a tad less than the monocrystalline panels, and under certain conditions will even out-produce the Monocrystalline)

Amorphous (these are the least costly panels and usually poor producers with a short lifespan)

So the Kenny Quick-Pick-Scale has:

The worst type of solar panel are the Amorphous, also referred to as "thin-film", or "man-made material Panel"

The highest energy producers are Monocrystalline

FIRST SPRINGFIELD OHIO SOLAR TRACKER ERECTED ONSITE, June 30, 2018 !

The first Solar Tracker has finally been erected! It's been a long-time necessity to get a solar tracker up and operational, but has been deferred due to the larger priorities around here. This is one of the smaller trackers put together (only 200watts), but since it has the ability to always be facing the sun whether in the morning eastern sky, or western nightfall, it will easily rival the production of an array with double the panels.

The solar tracker can be seen in remote control during a wind storm seen in the following video (after the wind wipes out my project).

But to throw a sentence toward answering whether or not the Springfield Ohio area is compatible with solar and wind-generation to power an edifice?

The answer is "Yes, but it takes more work than if you were in the southern-states as opposed to the northern."
